You left out an important part:
/usr/sbin/adduser -h
adduser --group [--gid ID] GROUP
addgroup [--gid ID] GROUP
Add a user group
So this is advertised as a supported syntax. I don't mind and have no
objection to using addgroup exclusively for this purpose, but then
adduser must not advtise that it works.
