CALL FOR PAPERS FOR INDIGENOUS MEN CONFERENCE
13th – 15th October 2014 | Pullman Cairns International Hotel | Cairns QLD

‘The second round of papers is now being sought for the 2014 Indigenous Men Conference scheduled in Cairns on October 13-15, 2014’

The conference is hosted by M.E.E.S (Australia) with great line up of speakers from around Australia and internationally. The overall aim of this conference is to provide a platform for Indigenous Men to celebrate their achievements in life within their home, family, community and workplace. Moreover, the event will focus on empowerment, strong leadership and self-determination of Indigenous Men. Throughout the three day event, we will be facilitating small group discussions with informative Guest Speakers with topics that emphasizes the positives of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander resilience and determination to strive for a better tomorrow without the constraints of the negative stereotyping which is more prevalent due to social media and bad media coverage.

Today’s society is plagued with stories of all the wrongs in our communities when in fact nothing could be further from the truth. For years as Indigenous men, we have strived to better our communities and families which have given rise to countless numbers of great initiatives and as such one of the ways to highlight these great achievements is to share this knowledge which has always been our cultural way. As such, we feel that it is time to start promoting these ideas so that others may be able to share and spread the knowledge.

This conference presents a unique opportunity for men to participate in a unique event which is devoted to the sharing of information and the empowering of men. In our everyday working environment the day to day stresses of our positions tends to limit us in expanding our knowledge and network. Whether you work at a community level or at governmental level the opportunity to network and gain contacts outside of your local region tend to be limited, this is why this conference will be so valuable to participants. This gathering will also highlight some of the existing indigenous men groups and programs currently implemented in Aboriginal and Torres Straits communities and provide a unique opportunity for delegates and speakers to see the power of people networking together in one place, at one time with similar goals and exchange information regarding the successes and challenges that workers involve in implementing Indigenous men services faced.

Hence we invite Indigenous Men, Indigenous Support Workers, Indigenous Men’s Groups, Community Leaders/Elders, Indigenous and non-indigenous people, Social Workers, Doctor, NGO Group, Consultant, Nurses Health Workers, Community Workers, People who have a interested in combating closing the gap, Rural Health or remote Health Professionals, Indigenous Health Professionals, Government Representatives, Psychiatrists, CEO’s, Police Officers, Community Workers, Human Rights Enthusiasts, Domestic Violence Workers and all interested parties to actively participate in the conference either as speakers, attendees and volunteers.

For many years, the provision of Indigenous services had been broken and fragmented when it comes to service delivery. However over time, service providers have joined forces in, not just the physical provision of services but also in such fields as research, health education and even the training of staffs in order to improve Indigenous men services; thus improving the whole family's well-being. .

To ensure grassroots community programs are highlighted, no less than 50 percent of the conference proceedings are and is devoted to community groups. Papers are now being called for the second round with the closing date on the 28th of February 2014. To further ensure the continuous success of the conference, an Indigenous working group is being established to advise on correct adherence to cultural equilibrium. The conference is not political based rather should be seen as an opportunity to access information that is not readily available at your own level.
