I added some tests to your patch and slightly tweaked the changelog
(sorry for my pedantry ☺ ):

As far as I can see, this should be the last outstanding issue for
supporting your use case, right? (Aside from the btrfs base image
issue which is handled in a separate bug). Therefor I close the bug
with the above commit and mark this as pending.
