Actually, I just checked and bash-completion is not installed here, but I do 
have a file /etc/bash_completion that says "RELEASE: 20060301" in the header.

This now explains why it couldn't have worked, but I'm still puzzled that an 
uninstalled package still has files hanging around, especially if those are 
not so much configuration but libraries.

Anyway, thanks for helping me getting this working again!
