I think my previous mail explains this nicely. I added the proposed
__expand_tilde_by_ref to my /etc/bash_completion.d/mutt. After doing so
a line in my .muttrc

source ~/somefile

is properly processed by bash_completion whereas a line

source "~/somefile"

is not. Do you see which quotes I am referring to?
