I tried almost the same card, plus a couple others:
nVidia Corporation NV31 [GeForce FX 5600 XT] (rev a1)
nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY <-- (acer laptop)
ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage IIC AGP (rev 3a)
with vanilla kernel 2.6.6, and everything is fine for me.
I suppose this means that there's something in your configuration that
is causing the problem. I also tried a couple different vga= options.
There's possibly something on the HDD that isn't on the CD. Maybe to do
with locales, or termcap, or utf, or fonts? Maybe you could do a 'diff
-qr cddir/etc origdir/etc' and usr, to see if anything obvious pops up.
If there's nothing obvious then I suppose you would have to build a
system in English and gradually add the support you need and stop when
it breaks - I'm assuming you're running some sort of i18n/l10n in your
image? However, this would not explain why it works on the HDD but not
on CD.
Cheers
Mark.
