Package: cdbs
Version: 0.4.21
Severity: wishlist

I see the TODO file for cdbs mentions:

 * Handle packages which build multiple versions with different ./configure
   flags.

I'm working on packaging newer upstream versions of the xerces
libraries. I was thinking of using cdbs. The xerces libaries fall
into the above category. I will attempt to handle this package in a
way that stays true to the spirit of cdbs (keeping detailed knowledge
out of the debian/rules) file. If this is successful, I'll send
patches or new rules files for cdbs. I wanted to mention this in a
bug report in case it triggers someone to mention that they're 90%
through with this or to offer words of wisdom, etc. :-) I have written
a build system very similar in spirit to cdbs for my employer. It
consists of lots of little gnu make fragments. Client makefiles set
variables and include a file. In other words, I think that I "grok"
what cdbs is trying to do. It looks very compelling.

I worked around the fact that cdbs doesn't have a convenient way to
configure packages multiple times by using lndir and some other make
tricks, but these wouldn't be suitable for cdbs. Also, I'm no longer
building any packages that need to do this. For these reasons, I'm
going to close this wishlist bug which I had earlier reported. Since
the item is in the TODO list, I don't need to have this bug sitting
here if I'm no longer expecting to contribute code. Thanks for cdbs
-- I use it for just about all of my packages now.
