If working since 5.8.0 then that change seems safe: That version is
required anyway as part of Debian Perl Policy.
Investigating further supports that: According to upstream changelog,
DESTDIR was introduced in version 6.06_01, and Debian oldstable (Etch)
contained version 6.42.
I'll make the change.
