I was mostly concerned about the ugly perl compilation error.  The
error that the directory didn't exist was imho fine.  But I suppose
creating it is okay too, although I'm not too fond of programs that
are trying to be smart.  But I cannot think of a situation right now
in which it would be bad if the directory was created automatically.
