Sorry (was to lazy to re-create the setup...).

It fails on some perl import thingy only available since 1.17..mom...

I.e., if you do a no-changes port (or just install the sid version) of
sbuild to wheezy, you get this.

Porting/installing dpkg-dev 1.17.0 to wheezy yet again makes it happy.
