It's worth noting that one of the Ubuntu patches is to remove the use of 
debfoster.

If there's a clever / robust way to make sbuild detect whether the target 
distro is Debian or Ubuntu, and conditionalize debfoster on that, that 
would both fix this bug and remove one of the deltas in Ubuntu.
