actually meanwhile I was looking into reordering the installation of
build-essential before the architecture check so that it's possible to use a
chroot without build-essential installed ;)

Anyways, if you feel this bug can be closed that's fine. I have these changes
in my local git anyways and will see if they are worth pushing.
