that is correct. The decoupling of the chroot from the host means that there is
no communication between the two without special magic.

I actually never used sbuild to also sign something I'm building. What is the
use case of this? Wouldn't one want to use mergechanges after sbuild is done
building and then debsign manually?

If the feature is still useful, this can be fixed by moving the signing step to
when the relevant files have already been moved from within the build
environment to the host.
