I read on stackoverflow that there's now a patchelf utility (probably using the BDF library) that can handle binaries that don't have an rpath, and sounds like it doesn't have the rewrite within the original string restriction that chrpath has:

It may actually be that chrpath does not even serve a purpose anymore.

Where's the svn repo for the current code?

Sure. I've commited it to subversion.

Note, chrpath need someone with time, interest and knowledge to take
over.
