hrm.  8.1 should respect PGPASSFILE, as it was only recently
introduced in 8.1.

in 7.4 and earlier, you could specify a value for HOME when
calling psql to override the default location (with a
temporary one), and place a .pgpass in there.  in 8.0, they
removed this functionality and instead rely on the output
of getent-style functions.

i guess this was a problem for more people than myself,
as in 8.1 they introduced the PGPASSFILE variable.
