it you're using the frontend hooks, it shouldn't ask you about purging
the database from a frontend package.  if this is what's happening
i'd guess it was a bug, though i'd need to see it for myself to be sure.
care to post your source packages?

in the meantime, you can try exporting dbc_debug=insane when you purge
the package, and it should give you lots and lots of sh -x output which
might help track down where the problem is.
