i've seen another issue or two like this coming from ubuntu.  but was
never ever really able to fix it. could you try applying the patch in 

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=406127

and see if that fixes your problem.  otherwise, could you see if the
problem is because /bin/sh is dash for you and bash for us?  maybe you
could try temporarily linking /bin/sh to bash and see if it fixes the
problem? it's possible that there are lurking bashisms that might be
causing the problem.
