I remembered the way how i obtained those texts applicable to
media which are physically available to me:

  $ cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 -atip
  ...
  Current: DVD-RW sequential overwrite

So it is not _my_ typo and now it is a compatibility
problem. 
cdrecord-2.01.01a4 still reports 
  Current: 0x0014
cdrecord-2.01.01a9 already says 
  Current: DVD-RW sequential overwrite

I'll post a bug report to cdwrite mailing list.
