Hi,

For the records:

xorriso covers the use cases of mkisofs with
ISO 9660 filesystems plus Rock Ridge. There it
has superior multi-session capabilities and
several extra features.

It cannot replace mkisofs with UDF or HFS.

It can replace cdrecord with the use case
of burning a session with a single data track
to CD. It is superior when it comes to
multi-session burns on DVD and BD media. There
it is much like growisofs.

xorriso cannot replace cdrecord with non-ISO
9660 burns on CD. Its cousin cdrskin can do
multi-track audio recording but not CD-XA,
Video-CD etc.

On Linux and on FreeBSD there is few need to
employ growisofs for burning xorriso images
- unless one has scripts based on growisofs,
of course.
An advantage of xorriso over growisofs is
its table-of-content emulation on overwriteable
media. On the other side growisofs is ported to
more operating systems and it still sets the
benchmark for DVD and BD. I learned a lot from
its source code.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas
