As said, I think that simply backslash-escaping the period at start of 
line should have worked, but it didn't for me.  Maybe I just don't know 
what I'm doing here (which would not be a big surprise ;)) or it's a 
groff bug.  Filed https://bugzilla.redhat.com/682857
