Recently I received a bug report against gabedit. The error looked like this:

dh_compress /gabedit-2.4.8/debian/gabedit/usr/share/doc/gabedit/examples/exampleGeoConv.gab
gzip: . is a directory -- ignored
dh_compress: gzip -9nf . usr/share/doc/gabedit/changelog [..]
debian/rules:61: recipe for target 'override_dh_compress' failed
make[1]: *** [override_dh_compress] Error 2

I'm able to reproduce the problem by simply running

dh_compress debian/gabedit/usr/share/doc/gabedit/examples/exampleGeoConv.gab

in the source directory. This will mess up the directory permissions of
debian/gabedit and lead to an error by gzip. If I remove the 'debian/gabedit/'
part, the command succeeds.

Any idea, what's causing this? Did I miss a change, that forbids the above?
