dh itself recommends to use dashes:

$ dh --list | grep "\-"
autotools-dev
bash-completion
cli-nant
config-model
d-i
eclipse-helper
kubuntu-l10n
perl-dbi
pkgkde-symbolshelper
python-central
python-support
