In this case you need to press fn+F8 or F9 tu unmute.

Hmm, when I set that, the OSD displays Audio Off only, and when I
press again, still says off. I'm in class so I can't test how it's
effecting the actual volume, but my guess from looking at the way the
status is reported is that this never unmutes the volume.
