i downgraded to 1.98~20100115-1:

ii  grub-common                                   1.98~20100115-1                GRand Unified Bootloader, version 2 (common files)
ii  grub-pc                                       1.98~20100115-1                GRand Unified Bootloader, version 2 (PC/BIOS version)

and it didn't help, i.e., screen does not go to 1366x768 mode during the
boot.

unfortunately it is not easy to downgrade from squeeze back to lenny.
