> I upgraded my eeepc 900 this weekend

How far behind were you?

> and now networkmanager is no longer working for either wired or
wireless connections ... It shows me the available connections, but
when I click on them, nothing happens. I've been using KDE/squeeze now
for months and all has been fine.

For months, hmm. So you haven't upgraded in all of that time? What
was your old kernel version? If you went from 2.6.26 (lenny kernel) to
2.6.32 (squeeze kernel) you may have just gone from ath0 (old,
non-free madwifi driver) -> wlan0 (new, free ath5k driver, in kernel).

Have a look over http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/Upgrade to
see if you've missed any of those steps.

> I followed the debian wiki instructions regarding NetworkManager but this didn't help. Also, I notice that wpa_supplicant is not running.

Please verify /etc/network/interfaces contains no references to your
wifi interface, as that is what tells NetworkManager it's OK to manage
your interface for you.

> The h/w is fine, as I can boot lenny from an old partition and connect fine with networkmanager and wlan0.

wlan0 with lenny? I guess you're using a kernel backport with that?
lenny never had support for ath5k. if that was your starting point for
squeeze, then my theory about ath0 -> wlan0 change is less likely.
just look over that Upgrade page carefully.
