kspell in kde4 use hspell and enchant libs directly, not their executables:

kmail use hard coded speler executables from kde3:
http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdelibs/kde3support/kdeui/k3spell.cpp?view=markup

I do not see them fixing the old kde3support for Diego ...
