michael.dufty just asked this question in Sugar Labs:

How can I run sugar on ubuntu 9.10 or off desktop hdd

Hi,
My computer doesn't support usb booting, so I thought I would try
running sugar under ubuntu.
I have completely failed to do so. Are there some detailed instructions
somewhere? It doesn't help that I am new to ubuntu as well as sugar, so
I may be doing things entirely wrong.
The pages I have found seem to say it maybe works with a bug on 9.04. Am
I wasting my time trying to run it on 9.10 at all?

I have tried installing sugar emulator from the ubuntu software centre.
This appears to install, but when I run sugar from the applications menu
nothing at all happens.

If I try sugar-emulator at a terminal I get a string of errors starting
with [dix] Could not init font path
element /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic, removing from list!
[config/dbus] couldn't take over org.x.config:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied (Connection ":1.71" is not
allowed to own the service "org.x.config.display100" due to security
policies in the configuration file) unrecognised device identifier!
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (2) unrecognised device
identifier!

and a blank window titled xephyr

If I try to log in as a sugar session I get an authentication error. Not
sure what I am supposed to be putting in for username etc there.

As an alternative to ubuntu is it possible to have sugar on a stick
running off the harddrive as an option on the grub bootloader?
