That's odd, I was under the impression that -jhbuild was working for Lenny.
I know that it works in Intrepid, I'm not sure about Hardy.

Sugar works very well when all the dependencies are met and the system
behaves as it expects (read: Fedora, OLPC XO OS), Debian is of course going
to have some sugar bugs.
