If the project have not yet been released to Debian, then yes, I believe
it is as simple as running git-import-orig on top of the already
imported tarball in the git.
I recommend to use the CDBS features to handle upstream tarballs:
Include upstream-tarball.mk, add variables about upstream location, and
use the build target "get-orig-source" to fetch it.

Try read that, and ask if it still does not make sense how to handle it.
