They're large and virtually nobody needs them these days (looks like
they were disabled in 2005 - 12 years later I believe you're actually
the first person to ask about them).

I think there also at least used to be crashing issues with GTK
theming when statically linking, though I'm failing to find a
reference so perhaps those are now addressed.
