On IRC I gave a pair of clues that I think are important, so I post them here.
On firebird (although aurel32 said this doesn't happen anymore):
22:01 < nyu> uhm.. for firebird it was a SysV IPC thing. i fixed a number of SysV bugs in firebird, but this one was really
strange
22:01 < nyu> I recall there was a test failure condition that depended on how many times the test was done
[...]
22:02 < nyu> it altered a sysctl variable or something iirc
On gworkspace:
22:01 < aurel32> for gworkspace and gnumail, there was something strange, a file which segfault when executed
[...]
22:02 < nyu> uhm
22:02 < nyu> probably the gnustep heisenbug
22:02 < nyu> http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/glibc-bsd-devel/2004-December/000344.html
[...]
22:03 < nyu> IIRC when i first built gworkspace i did this workaround (without altering the package source)

I'm giving it a try after disabling java (which depends on boehm-gc), but i'm
using friki and it may take a while.
