I think this is because it is deleted from gpg-agent. If you quit without saving, it's already gone, since the gpg-agent already deleted it and there's no way to get it back. I guess just updating the instructions is the way to go. Merge them, even, and add a note to backup .gnupg before doing it if you want to keep the private key.
