Hello,

A bit late to the party, but here I go with shameless self-promotion:

The Motsognir server does what you are looking for. Runs on POSIX, knows
how to serve per-user gopher content, and is available as a deb package
(my understanding is that these work also for Ubuntu).

Project homepage:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/motsognir/

Various binary packages available here:
http://software.opensuse.org/package/motsognir

You might want to take a look at the manual before considering checking
out the software, so here is Motsognir's manual:
http://sourceforge.net/p/motsognir/code/HEAD/tree/manual.pdf?format=raw

cheers,
Mateusz
