UMN gopher has (IMHO) a bug where it assumes the default gopher server it
accesses by default is always Gopher+, and misbehaves if it doesn't get a
Gopher+ response. This is a kludge to work around that issue with UMN
gopher if it uses Floodgap (or any other Bucktooth server) as the default.

Essentially this does force UMN back into regular Gopher mode until it
receives a menu that indicates a Gopher+ option. If you want to get around
this, you'd need to find a default home gopher server that supports Gopher+
and use that.
