From kevin at veroneau.net Thu Sep 1 02:40:26 2016 From: kevin at veroneau.net (Kevin Veroneau) Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2016 20:40:26 -0600 Subject: [gopher] New Cross-Platform Gopher GUI Client In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <201608312040.26223.kevin@veroneau.net> Hello All! As promised there is a new update which adds many new features. It seems my phone's email client doesn't properly send email messages, I apologize for that... I'll bring up the new updates again in this more text/plain email message... This new version now sports a customizable search bar on the upper right, just like Firefox and Mozilla browser products. Now you can easily search either Veronica-2 or Gopherpedia directly without needing to bookmark their page or navigate gopherspace -- Just enter your query and hit the button! Works like magic and brings modern browser search to the gopher world. I also updated the default font size on OS X, so now it should be much much easier to read and use. :) Let me know what you think. Lazarus for OS X does support cross-compiling into PPC object code, unfortunately when I did try, it didn't compile. I will be working with the Lazarus forums for help on getting it to compile for PPC, so stay tuned for a PPC build. Today I also took a few minutes to create a demo video of the Gopher client, and am uploading it to YouTube now. I will also upload the FLOSS complient OGV file into my Gopherspace soon as well. You can find the YouTube video once it completes here: https://youtu.be/NnQjtkfz5Ms As always, any feedback is great. I want to make this the most modern and useful cross-platform gopher client around. On Wednesday, August 31, 2016 03:30:27 PM Kevin Veroneau wrote: >

When zoomed in (OS X -> System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Zoom) it's quite hard to read any of the content in the client :/ Very very blurry :) I'll nonetheless test out the latest update though! cheers James James Mills / prologic E: prologic at shortcircuit.net.au W: prologic.shortcircuit.net.au On Wed, Aug 31, 2016 at 7:40 PM, Kevin Veroneau wrote: > Hello All! > > As promised there is a new update which adds many new features. I'll need to see how the tree view could be rendered with a larger font and see how that effects the icons and general usability. Lazarus appears to also include access to the OSes native select font dialogue window, so I can see about making it fully customizable by including this. Thanks for testing it regardless. The next release will for sure include more accessibility options. Let me know what you think overall. Networking isn't yet done in a separate thread, so downloading and accessing resources does still hang the GUI. :( a download manager will soon be added too. When zoomed in (OS X -> System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Zoom) it's quite hard to read any of the content in the client :/ Very very blurry :) I'll nonetheless test out the latest update though! cheers James James Mills / prologic E:?prologic at shortcircuit.net.au W:?prologic.shortcircuit.net.au On Wed, Aug 31, 2016 at 7:40 PM, Kevin Veroneau wrote: Hello All! ? As promised there is a new update which adds many new features.? It seems my phone's email client doesn't properly send email messages, I apologize for that... ? I'll bring up the new updates again in this more text/plain email message... ? This new version now sports a customizable search bar on the upper right, just like Firefox and Mozilla browser products.? Now you can easily search either Veronica-2 or Gopherpedia directly without needing to bookmark their page or navigate gopherspace -- Just enter your query and hit the button! Works like magic and brings modern browser search to the gopher world. ? I also updated the default font size on OS X, so now it should be much much easier to read and use.? :)? Let me know what you think. ? Lazarus for OS X does support cross-compiling into PPC object code, unfortunately when I did try, it didn't compile.? I will be working with the Lazarus forums for help on getting it to compile for PPC, so stay tuned for a PPC build. ? Today I also took a few minutes to create a demo video of the Gopher client, and am uploading it to YouTube now.? I will also upload the FLOSS complient OGV file into my Gopherspace soon as well.? You can find the YouTube video once it completes here:? https://youtu.be/NnQjtkfz5Ms ? As always, any feedback is great.? I want to make this the most modern and useful cross-platform gopher client around. On Wednesday, August 31, 2016 03:30:27 PM Kevin Veroneau wrote: >

This morning marks yet another update to my Gopher client. This update includes a new font selector, which uses the OSes native font dialog. I confirmed that the font does change on Linux/OSX/Win10. This should help out with any accessibility, the tree also respects this font choice as well. You can find it under the "Options" menu. This update also includes a proper threaded download manager! Yay! Now you can download files and images from Gopherspace, and a download manager window will appear to display the progress. There is also initial support for rendering Gopher menu items in the HTML pane. Previously when the Gopher menu was rendered, menu items were not clickable. With this update, you can browser gopher just as you would in a non-tree gopher browser. This support is experimental, so there might be bugs, and not all gopher menu items will work through this mode. This is more or less so that when you view a gopher menu, you can tell what items are 'i' items, and which ones are gopher items. As usual, the updated binary files and source code can be found on my GopherSpace, and the source code repository on my BitBucket page has also been updated with the source code changes. There is still much work to be had, but thus far this Gopher client is shaping into something great and very fun to work on during my pass time. So this is Gophernicus 2.0 "for Workgroups". I should do 2.1 with proper hybrid .deb packages and then 2.2 with hybrid .rpm support (hybrid being inetd/xinetd/systemd/whatevertheyusethisweek-d). Maybe installp support for Cameron as well so he can finally have a proper modern Gopher daemon :D - Kim > On 08 Sep 2016, at 20:39, James Mills wrote: > > What's with the "for Workgroups" bit? :) Did I miss an announcement about this? :) > > > James Mills / prologic > > E: prologic at shortcircuit.net.au > W: prologic.shortcircuit.net.au > > On Thu, Sep 8, 2016 at 7:10 AM, Kim Holviala > wrote: > Yeah yeah, I just removed the -alpha from VERSION. There are three examples: - a simple file server - a simple client - a simple custom handler https://github.com/prologic/go-gopher So far the design of this library is heavily inspired by the standard net/http library with simple interfaces. My plans are to work on continuing development and support for go-gopher to a point where it is mature enough for a full-fledged cross-platform GUI Gopher client (Yes I'm also working on one; because why not!) as well as a re-implementation of cgod (Python) in Go. cheers James James Mills / prologic E: prologic at shortcircuit.net.au W: prologic.shortcircuit.net.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apologies for the prolonged silence. Waning interest in Pocket Gopher coincided with a bad time in my life, so I dropped the ball for a few years. Now I'm back, not least thanks to that recent article on www.minnpost.com, but as feature phones have fallen by the wayside, there's little point in continuing with my old client. So I decided to make a new one. Gophersnake is written in Python and Tkinter, so it's inherently portable (should run out of the box on most Linux and Mac boxes). It's also stand-alone, modern-looking, and like its predecessor offers the user a decent set of starting points. All this should make Gopher more visible to newcomers than a browser plugin. It's still at a very early stage, but I'll keep poking at it. And just in case anyone shows more than a passing interest, I put it on GitHub for now: https://github.com/felixplesoianu/gophersnake -- its nature also makes it easier to hack and maintain. So, hope this helps. Best regards, Felix P.S.
