[helix-maintainers] Bug#340721: helix-player points to non-free
software instead of playing movie

debacle at debian.org
Fri Nov 25 11:54:35 UTC 2005
Package: helix-player
Version: 1.0.4-1sarge1
Severity: normal
On visiting http://www.wdr.de/tv/monitor/real.phtml with Mozilla
Firefox and clicking on "abspielen" (play), no movie is shown -
instead an error message box is presented:
"Component Missing
The player does not have the capabilities
to play back this content.
[Check for Updates...] [Details...]
[Help] [OK]"
Clicking on "Check for Updates..." leads to the page
http://www.real.com/linux, that promotes non-free software to
play the movie. One can download an i386 binary (no link to any
other platform nor source code) and that's it.
If helix-player cannot support the movie format, that's OK,
but a Debian package should not promote download non-free
software from a third party, IMHO. Plus: without any notice,
that this is not part of Debian, and that Debian cannot ensure
security for such software, etc.
