It might be a good idea to offer some helpers for applications (such
as apache) where this doesn't work that way. There are a couple of
init-related tools for such cases such as 'pidfilehack'.
While they might depend on the particular init system used, we should
try to find a common API for them and handle alternatives somewhat.
I was wondering whether we should abuse $PATH for switching between
init systems. That is, run meta-init fragments with
PATH=/usr/lib/init/foobar:$PATH to allow init systems to override
certain tools this way.
