Thank you.  I merged most of your patch.  Did not like these parts:

> -STATIC	=

Kept this variable for those that want static building and got
existing build rules for it.

>  # Additional libs for GNU libc.
> -ifneq ($(wildcard /usr/lib/libcrypt.a),)
>  LCRYPT		= -lcrypt
> -endif

Also kept this part, for those not using glibc.
