upstream release that can be integrated in the distribution.

Apart from the default version, legacy versions of Ruby
may be included as well in the distribution, as long as they
are needed by other packages, or as long as it seems
reasonable to provide them. (Note: For the scope of this
document, Ruby versions are synonymous to feature
releases, i.e. Ruby 1.6 and 1.6.8 are subminor versions of
the same Ruby version 1.6, but Ruby 1.8 and 1.9 are
indeed different versions.)

Since we don't have version independent module path
(<ref id="paths">), you must package ruby modules for each ruby
version even if the module is really version independent.
So, your choice is
(1) package only for default version of ruby, or (2) package
for each available versions of ruby.

<package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby</package>

The package name <package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby</package>

<package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby<var>X</var>.<var>Y</var></package>
that is packaged for default version of
ruby <var>X</var>.<var>Y</var>. By using such a dummy package,
user can easily follow upgrading.

These packages are libwebrick-ruby, libzlib-ruby, libopenssl-ruby,
libstrscan-ruby, drb, libiconv-ruby, xmlrpc4r,
libtest-unit-ruby, libyaml-ruby, librexml-ruby and
forthcoming soap4r and so on.
</p>

Currently, these are packaged from <package>ruby1.8</package>
source package. FIXME: how do we handle this issue?

<appendix id="transition_1.6_to_1.8">
<heading>Ruby 1.6 to 1.8 transition</heading>
<p>
Currently, ruby 1.6 is packaged as <package>ruby</package>, so
this does not follow this ruby policy. So, we'll do as follows.
</p>
<p>
Initially, we, ruby maintenance team, will intent to package
<package>ruby1.6</package>.
We'll make <package>ruby1.6</package> from ruby_1.6.8 with
renaming ruby to ruby1.6.
</p>
<p>
We also make package <package>ruby-defaults</package> providing
<package>ruby</package> and <package>libruby</package> packages.
<package>Ruby</package> package depends on <package>ruby1.6</package>
and includes
<file>/usr/bin/ruby</file> symlinked to
<file>/usr/bin/ruby1.6</file> and this ruby policy text.
<package>libruby</package> package depends on
<package>libruby1.6</package>.
</p>
<p>
Module packages are packaged as
<package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby1.6</package> for ruby1.6,
and optionally
<package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby</package> that depends on
<package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby1.6</package>.
</p>
<p>
Note that old version of <package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby</package>
and renamed version of <package>lib<var>foo</var>-ruby1.6</package>
provides files with same pathnames, so that you must add
conflicts & replaces against older versions. That is, don't
forget to add to debian/control:
<example>
Conflicts: lib<var>foo</var>-ruby (<< <var>renamed-version</var>)
Replaces: lib<var>foo</var>-ruby (<< <var>renamed-version</var>)
</example>
</p>
<p>
Version-dependent ruby programs should depends on
<package>ruby1.6</package> and use <tt>#!/usr/bin/ruby1.6</tt>
instead of <tt>#!/usr/bin/ruby</tt>.
</p>
<p>Version-independent ruby program that depends on
<tt>ruby (>= 1.6)</tt>
but no upper bound limit such as <tt>ruby (<< 1.8)</tt> or so,
make sure it actually works on ruby1.8. If it works on
ruby1.8, it should depend on
<tt>ruby (>= 1.6), ruby (<< 1.9)</tt>.
If it doesn't work on ruby1.8, it is version dependent ruby program,
so it must depend on <tt>ruby1.6</tt>.
</p>
<p>
After waiting for a week or so(?), we will change default
version of ruby from 1.6 to 1.8. Ruby modules and programs
should be modified to work with default version of ruby 1.8.
