Sure, that'd work around the immediate problem in Debian. OTOH, I'd rather
like to fix it properly, so that the user is never shown an incorrect
message here.

Once I hear back from upstream what direction they'd like to go here (that
is if they want to try to autocreate the backup directory or not), I'd
also upload a fixed Debian package. (Well, I'd also wait for your response
on #858434, because I'd rather like to fix both things in one go.)
