[Logcheck-devel] Rules provided by other packages

Hey,

I think the way rules are provided by other packages needs a bit of a
rethink, for several reasons:

(a) Some package maintainers are better versed in regular expressions
than others, hence some write better rules than others

(b) It's difficult for Mr. Joe Bloggs (or Ms. Josephine Bloggs) to work
out which rules are provided by logcheck and which rules are provided
by other packages. Should they even have to work this out at all?

(c) If packages get abandoned for a long period of time, the rules for
those packages don't get updated either.

(d) Related to (b), apart from apt-file search foobar, there's no 'list
of rules provided by other packages' in logcheck. Maybe a better way
would be separating rules provided by _other packages_ into different
directories? (Con: This might end up making the directory structure more
complicated ..)

These are just unpolished thoughts/ideas off the top of my head, treat
with a pinch of salt. Opinions welcome.

Thanks,

-j
