This is pretty weird.  It would be useful to know if/why thelock is [really]
failing.

I can't seem to reproduce it on my machines.

Do you think you could try changing the lock line(595) to somehting like:
lockfile-create --retry 1 $LOCKFILE >> /tmp/logcheck_error  2>&1
