Package: logcheck
Version: 1.2.58.0
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The attached patch is the diff from current svn trunk to my svn branch
zugschlus200707. It introduces a new binary package logtail2 with a
new binary logtail2 which enhances logtail substantially. logtail2 can
process rotated logs internally, which makes the code inside logcheck
and other programs that use logtail2 easier to handle. Additionally,
detection of rotated log files is done using a plug-in scheme which
allows local admins to easily plug in code to detect their local
rotation scheme. Code for logtails's current code (savelog, logrotate)
is included, as well as new code for logrotate dateext.

It is my plan to encourage users of logtail to migrate over to
logtail2 (which should be a drop-in replacement modulo the new
behavior), so that logtail can be removed in a future package version.

The code is "kind of" tested, as I only have systems available that
use a rather customized logging scheme with "logrotate dateext".

I would like to merge my changes to trunk. After that, you guys can
decide whether (a) one of you uploads, or (b) I do an NMU or (c) I add
myself to uploaders and upload. I'd also leave it to your discretion
whether the new code should go to eperimental or to unstable. It is my
experience with the exim4 packages that noone uses experimental
packages, even if they are prominently advertised. So, my decision
would be to add myself to uploaders and upload to unstable.

I'd appreciate your comments.

Greetings
Marc
