Here's an old mail I received that didn't make it into the non-free
replacements list. 

Conclusion: vmips is a complete replacement for spim. And, in the next
release also its documentation will be probably free.

Hi there,

On pingviini.net/nikke/debian/non-free.html, you note that vmips (as a
possible replacement for spim) has its documentation under FDL.  I wanted
to let you know that the next release of vmips will have its documentation
under a license similar to that of the traditional MIT X11 distribution.

You also note that it is "R3000 only"; the R3000 is an exactly equivalent
(from the software point of view) redesign of the R2000 with a more
efficient hardware implementation. I think the right way to think of
both SPIM and VMIPS is as "R2000/R3000" simulators.
