some complementary info, since I've worked on fixing this:
- using either cc or gcc works on HPUX PA-RISC works
- the "no suffix list" warning / error occurs with HP's make
- using gmake avoid the above error,
- Chetan is on an Itanium.

I've just commited r2408 which should fix this (validated locally on HP-UX PA-RISC).

SHELL=/sbin/sh

I got the resolution with discussion with Arnaud,  
using gmake resolves this issue. Please see the attached new log file. 

Uname output for the system - 
HP-UX y B.11.23 U ia64 1811928338 unlimited-user license
