Yes. I suppose it was working thanks to the DNS.

In this case, the Debian install system (this was debootstrap in
my case) should make sure that a /etc/hosts is created. Or the
installation manual[*] should be fixed: it says to set up /etc/fstab,
/etc/network/interfaces, /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hostname, but
there's nothing about /etc/hosts.

Yes, I checked and was quite surprised. So, it didn't exist until
I created one to use pbuilder.
