I have a /data directory but not directly. This is how it stacks at my end :-

[$]  /bin/mount | grep ^/dev
                                                            [20:20:45]
/dev/sda6 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered)
/dev/sda7 on /home type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)
/dev/sda8 on /data type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)

Then there are some directories which are symlinked to the /data
directory as well.

[$] ll -h /home/shirish/Videos
lrwxrwxrwx 1 shirish shirish 20 Apr 21  2014 /home/shirish/Videos ->
/data/shirish/Videos

I have 2-3 more such symlinked paths/directories as /home couldn't
hold that much data.

Anyways, hope that explains your question.
