    Indeed, when I upgraded libasound2 from 1.0.20-4 to 1.0.21a-1 it 
fixed the problem!
    My new hw_params with Audacious is this now:
access: RW_INTERLEAVED
format: S16_LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 44100 (44100/1)
period_size: 512
buffer_size: 16384

    The original reporter is missing, so maybe this bug should be closed 
now since it is most likely a problem with the old libasound2 library 
and not Audacious.
