You're more then welcome to join the pkg-awstats team!
You'll find the new package git repository at:
http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/awstats.git

Sergey has already done alot of work on the package, which
unfortunately haven't reach the official debian archive yet.
It would be great if you coordinated with Sergey[1] on what
work remains and picks up the remaining blocking issues.
