our main use of R here is for information retrieval (PCA and SVD-heavy)
and various sorts of social network analysis. i'm trying to talk the
visualization people into CEASING to do "arty" visualization and into
doing MEANINGFUL statistical visualizations instead. :)

stuff i've had my hands in lately:

RGraphviz
sna
matrix
mathgraph (i think that's the package name?)
SparseM
graph
dynamicGraph
ROracle (i wish Oracle had a sane, redistributable set of client libs...
ROracle is *very* difficult to build.)
RPgSQL
DBI

etc etc etc.

we do have a population of bioinformatics and chemical informatics folk
who take 'interesting' classes from us and so end up using our lab - but
those people haven't really been asking for much by way of support, so I
haven't had a chance to dig in yet.
